The Special Education: Students with Disabilities (All Grades) Initial Teaching Certification and Students with Disabilities Subject Area Extensions are designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field and want to become certified special education teachers. This program equips you with the skills and knowledge to teach Students with Disabilities in Grades PreK-12 and offers optional subject area extensions for Grades 5-9 and 7-12 in various subjects.

Who Should Apply?

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college/university.
  • You have a 3.0+ GPA and a strong academic background.
  • You are passionate about education and supporting students with disabilities.
  • You’ve completed (or are willing to complete) six credit hours in foundational coursework in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
  • You want the option to specialize in a subject area extension for middle and high school teaching.

Coursework Delivery

Coursework is delivered through a thoughtfully designed mix of face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. 

Candidates can expect a blend of in-person and flexible learning experiences across the program. 

Due to the field-based components and student teaching requirements, candidates should plan for a consistent on-campus and school-based presence, and residency in the Western New York region is strongly recommended.

Student-Teaching Placements

The All Grades Students with Disabilities (SWD) initial certification program requires two 8-week student teaching placements: one in Preschool–Grade 6 and one in Grades 7–12.
