Dorothea and Mildred Seegler Endowed Scholarships

For EXE graduate students

The Dorothea and Mildred Seegler Endowed Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for two current Exceptional Education graduate students - one scholarship on behalf of Dorothea Seegler, and another on behalf of Mildred Seegler. Chosen candidates receive a $7000 annual scholarship, half provided at the beginning of the fall semester, and half provided at the beginning of the spring semester. Scholarships are deposited directly into a recipient's student account to be applied toward attendance costs.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Dorothea and Mildred Seegler Endowed Scholarship for Exceptional Education students, a candidate must:

  • be enrolled as a part-time or full-time graduate student at SUNY Buffalo State for fall 2014;
  • complete the 2014-2015 Free Application for  Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
  • complete and submit the Dorothea and Mildred Seegler Endowed Scholarship application
  • list 3 references who can attest to your academic and or personal commitment to the field of exceptional education;
  • provide a personal essay.

The recipients will be expected to:

  • attend a recognition event on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 (if the recipient cannot make the awards ceremony, s/he is expected to send a representative in her/his place);
  • provide a written statement of appreciation to the donor prior to receiving the scholarship.

Joseph and Mary Jean Daly Varga '43 Scholarship

For EXE graduate students

Through the generosity of the Joseph & Mary Daly Varga ’43 Scholarship Fund, the Exceptional Education Department is pleased to offer a scholarship that pays tuition for 1 semester to one part-time graduate student majoring in special education who is maintaining at least a 3.8 GPA.  Applications will be reviewed by three members of the Exceptional Education Department Awards Committee. The award recipient will be notified by mail or telephone by the second week in October.

Requirements
  • Maintain part-time graduate status majoring in special education at SUNY Buffalo State for the 2014-2015 academic year, as verified by college records. NOTE: Full-time students may apply; however, only two courses would be covered if a full-time applicant receives the award.
  • Maintain enrollment in a minimum of two classes
  • Maintain academic performance of cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher
  • Complete and submit the scholarship application
  • Provide a personal essay
  • List 3 references who can attest to your academic and or personal commitment to the field of exceptional education

Geraldine and Gustave Werner Foundation Scholarship

For EXE undergraduate students

Through the generosity of the Geraldine and Gustave Werner Foundation, the Exceptional Education Department is pleased to offer a scholarship that pays full tuition for 1 year to one full-time undergraduate student majoring in special education who is maintaining at least a 2.8 GPA.  Applications will be reviewed by three members of the Exceptional Education Department Awards Committee. Horace Mann Scholarships

For EXE undergraduate and graduate students

Dr. Horace Mann will be forever remembered on campus and beyond for his pioneering work in the field of exceptional education and his unparalleled generosity to Buffalo State. Under his leadership as director of the Exceptional Children Education Division, the undergraduate and graduate programs in exceptional education rose to prominence and became among the largest in the United States. Before retiring in 1992, he had helped to educate more than 7,000 exceptional education teachers.

Before his passing in 2010, Dr. Mann created scholarships to ensure that students in the Exceptional Education Department would directly benefit from his generosity and further his life’s work of educating students with disabilities. The Exceptional Education Department has the honor of offering scholarships to undergraduate (2 total) and graduate (4 total from two different applications) students in the Exceptional Education Department at SUNY Buffalo State.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Horace Mann Scholarships for Exceptional Education students, a candidate must:

  • be enrolled as a full-time student at SUNY Buffalo State for fall 2015;
  • complete the 2015-2016 Free Application for  Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
  • list 3 references that can attest to your academic and or personal commitment to the field of exceptional education;

In addition, the successful applicant must:

  • contribute to the diversity of the student body in the program for which they are applying; or
  • be a member of a group that is historically underrepresented at Buffalo State or have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic, educational, or other disadvantages or disabilities
